Headed out today in the wind.   I am sad I missed so many good weather days last week.  The first 3.5 were very tough.  I felt like I was pushing as hard as I could and going so slow.  The legs were dead.  We head up a 1 mile  gradual hill and I started feeling much better and I pushed as hard as I could and I could feel my old self coming back.  We decided to add on a little to give us 7 for the day and we ran the 1 mile flat (which felt great also) and then turned for the winding downhill home.  The first third was pretty gradual and I could feel my quad tightening but I was okay.  The second third is steep downhill.  Soon as we started down the hill my knee pain return with a vengence.  We walked home.  The good thing is I have a good idea where to target some massage to relieve the knot.  We will run on flat elevation the rest of the week.  I am pretty unsure about the Spectrum 10k at this point because so much is downhill.  Overall I am happy with todays run because I had some moments of feeling really good with good running  and I have some ideas on why there is still some residual knee pain and how to resolve it.

Good running, Jody! Hope the knee problems sort themselves out this week so you can smoke them all at the 10k this weekend!

Oooo. Sorry about your knee! All I can say is that you run stinkin' fast for being in careful mode. Does it only hurt on downhill, then? Is it on the side of your knee?

From Bethany on Tue, Mar 04, 2008 at 11:28:01

"stinkin fast" just about covers it. 8:52 is stellar for an injury. I am glad you think you know how to help your knee along a little and really really hope it heals quickly! Nice run today!

Lybi - The pain is right under the knee cap and and it only is painful on the downhill. I will have twinges on the flat and feel great going uphill.

Good job pushing through the pain! You've got a little time before the 10K to rest and let everything feel better.

It sounds like you have "runners knee", downhill running usually aggravates it. You can look it up online, you might want to look into getting one of those bands that goes around the knee. I know lots who wear them and swear by them. Just a thought.

Jody, I think Marcie is right on the money. Does your knee hurt on the outside? After my knee surgery, I was on crutches for awhile, this caused my IT band to tighten up. When I would run the IT band would cause the knee cap to pull to the outside and take it out of its groove. This causes alot of pain from the cap rubbing on tendons and ligaments. There is a method called knee taping, this will give immediate relief when you run if you have runners knee. The tape is a temporary fix, You can usually fix this problem for good, by using a massage therapist. My neighbor is a physical therapist and showed me how to tape. You should use someone qualified the fist time, but after that you will be able to do it yourself. Anyway sorry for the long anwser, but it sure helped me.

Jody, some good advice here from the M & Ms. We have went to massage Envy on about 6300 south state, Ellen and Evan are the massage people. They both do a good job. This place is a little cheaper than most. It does help. We both got a massage on saturday and it did make a big difference.

Hope your knee gets better. IT Bands are tough to keep loose.

Hey, I am actually taking a day off from running, only the 4th day in 4 months of running. I must be running crazy.

I think you have definitely carried me far more than I've done you. I just hopeyou get feeling better so I can chase you the whole time again instead of just part of the time.

You are a trooper to tuff through it.
